Art Expectations 372-3 Tickler Strong

Two days! Can’t believe I am getting so close! To. The. End.

{Day 372 Page 398}  Back in London, Pip is starting to feel better. He asks Joe how much he knows. Pip wonders if he knows about Magwitch, his death, Estella and Miss Havisham. He asks Joe if he knows who the true patron of Pip’s Great Expectations is. (WAS!) Joe admits that he knows. Pip decides to set in on the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Confessing all to Joe. But before he can even start, Joe starts talking about Pip’s sister, Joe’s former wife. He tells Pip he always tried to protect Pip from her and her “Tickler”. (The wooden stick that she used to whack Joe and Pip on the head, to keep them in line.) He discovered though that when he intervened, her punishment was even harsher. So he backed off. He wanted Pip to know that it wasn’t because he didn’t care.

{Day 373 Page 399)  Joe talks more about Pip’s sister and how he wanted to protect Pip. He tells him there is no reason to discuss unnecessary subjects like past regrets, including the recent troubles Pip has had. He understands why Pip left and didn’t come back. All is forgiven and forgotten. Biddy helped Joe in his realization of this. Pip wonders if Joe knows how poor he is now. His Great Expectations have dissolved like the “marsh mists before the sun.” As Pip becomes stronger he notices Joe starting to back off. Pip has been enjoying the sweet care Joe has given him. They had fallen into their old ways. He believes it’s all his fault. Pip had written Joe off when he was rich and strong. Maybe Joe is afraid Pip will do it again. Or that Pip does not need him any more.
