Great Expectations

Two pages in one post again!
[Day 326 Page 349]  As Pip tells all he knows about Estella, Molly and Provis, he is careful not to let Jaggers know that some of this knowledge came from Wemmick, Jaggers’ clerk. He doesn’t wish to get Wemmick into trouble with his employer. Pip doesn’t blame, suspect or mistrust Jaggers. He just wants confirmation of the truth about Estella’s family. He feels he needs to explain why he is so concerned about it. He confesses to Wemmick and Jaggers his love for Estella. He’s loved her “dearly and long.” But she’s lost to him, having married his arch-enemy, Drummle. He begs Wemmick to tell Jaggers to stop treating him like a child. By doing this he hints at Wemmick’s private life. That he knows Wemmick in a personal manner, not only for business. Jaggers (maybe trying to change the subject away from Estella) starts teasing Wemmick about his softer, private, pleasant life away from work. Apparently Pip knows more about Wemmick also, than does Jaggers! Wemmick stands his ground stating that it doesn’t affect his work.

[Day 327 Page 350]  Jaggers goes on to explain his reason for taking Estella away from her mother, Molly, and giving her to grow up under the care of Miss Havisham, the wealthy spinster. All about him in his daily work he saw too many children being born into poverty and crime. These children had no chance but to grow up and be cast out, imprisoned, neglected or hanged. Here was a pretty child who could be saved. And at the same time, a wealthy woman in want of a child to rear. So Jaggers made the deal with Molly. He’d do whatever he could to win her case and save the child too. Maybe Jaggers has a heart after all?

I finished these two pages on the last two panels of the tiny accordion book, using acrylic and paint pens. 326 represents Wemmick’s private dream life. 327 is a sweet, small, praying Estella. My heart goes out to all the people of Paris and France as they mourn the loss of loved ones in Friday’s terrorist attacks.

I created this piece while waiting in my car in the dark, and it was pretty cold outside and inside the car. I could barely see what I was doing. Thank goodness I had these glow-in-the-dark paint pens with me!

[Pg 222] Pip is so excited and nervous awaiting the arrival of Estella, that he stalks the station in London way before her coach has even left the Blue Boar back home! While pacing outside the London station he runs into Wemmick. (He’s the clerk for Jaggers and treated Pip to an unusual meal at his homemade castle.) Wemmick discusses a bit of work (a legal case) with Pip and asks if Pip would like to accompany him to Newgate Prison. “Have you time to spare?” Does Pip have time to spare?! Yes, indeed! Plus he needs the distraction until Estella arrives.

I decided to see what I could find out about Newgate Prison. Here is a link with some helpful, interesting information and a picture of the prison as it would have appeared at the time Pip was living in London:

Newgate Prison was demolished in 1904. Thanks for the information!
